A carrier will often request various supplies from a range of different suppliers, either directly or through the services of ship chandlers. In response, these suppliers, when ready, will send cargo to a designated lighter for final delivery to the carrier. Thus, a single lighter will receive cargo from multiple suppliers, and must wait at the lighterage terminal until all suppliers complete their transfer of goods, before completing the final delivery to the carrier. Currently, such activity is not well coordinated, resulting in lengthy wait times by lighters at the terminal.
How might we better coordinate information between multiple suppliers and lighters (e.g. delivery times), in order to minimize wait times for lighters and also reduce congestion at lighterage terminals?
